Fonio, also known as ‘Acha’ in Nigeria, is a high fiber, easily digestible gluten free grain grown in West Africa. It is packed with nutrients and essential amino acids, rich in Protein and Iron, and a good source of Magnesium, Phosphorus and Dietary Fiber.
The Iron in protein reduces tiredness and fatigue, while the Protein and Fiber promotes the feeling of fullness.
Fonio has a rich, slight nutty flavor and a texture much smaller than quinoa and couscous. It has a low glycemic index which makes it a perfect food for diabetics.

How to make Fonio
Fonio grain is very versatile, it is ideal for cereal, stir fry and works as a perfect swap for quinoa and couscous.
Cooked fonio can also be added to your smoothies for more fiber, to keep you fuller for longer. Fonio absorbs a lot of water, so a little goes a long way.
To serve as rice or add to stir fry: Toast 1/2 cup in a small saucepan with 1/2 teaspoon of oil, stirring over medium heat. Add a pinch of salt, 1 cup of water and stir well until the grain absorbs all liquid. Remove from heat and let it cool. Fluff with a fork and add to your recipes as desired
For cereal: – Bring 2 cups water or milk to a boil, add 1/4 cup fonio grain and stir for 5 minutes. Taste to ensure that the grain is done. Add more water if necessary. Sweeten as desired, you can also top with fruits and nuts.
Fonio grain cereal is an ideal gluten free breakfast for both adults and children from the age of 6 months.
